Effective Presentation Skills

Many of you may be wondering what makes a good presentation. Or how can you ensure that your presentation is effective. Well, there are a few things that you can do to make sure that you achieve your goal each and every time.

What You Say

Make sure that what you have to say is well researched, that it is put together with a beginning, middle and end. That it is concise and to the point. That it doesn’t have “red herrings” in it–points that are irrelevant to your position or that takes you away from your objective. Explain any new terminologies so that the audience can follow you. Use visual aids properly and sparingly you don’t want your visual aid to distract your audience from your speech.

Be Natural

You want your audience to see that you are relaxed, comfortable and natural. You do to want to appear nervous or fearful. You want to exude an air of confidence. You want to be personal–engage your audience as you would a friend.

Answer Their Questions

Answer your audience’s questions within your presentation (especially if you have done research and know that they have concerns, objections, or strong feelings about a particular point). If you are asked a question from the floor answer the question asked and try not to deflect, avoid, or change the question. Answer it as completely and directly as you possibly can. And if you don’t know the answer be honest enough to say so.

People still respect an honest and truthful answer–and it will help you to grow in credibility with your listeners.
