Giving Voice to Your Words (June 20, 2010)

On June 20th, we had the opportunity to share with the RAA writer’s group on the topic of How to Give Voice to Your Words.

The event was at T-6 in BreezyPoint at Fort Tilden. In attendance were various artists–playwrights, photographers, freelance writers, children story writers, writing hobbyists etc. Each was interested in how they could use public speaking to make their words come alive!

“People can read your words on a page…but the passion and excitement comes from your voice. Only you can give life to your words!”–MJDWelcome

How can you give life to your words?

There are a few simple things that you can do that will help your words come alive and will ensure that your presentation goes well. I will share a few of them with you.

  • Practice
  • Research
  • Eliminating distractions–nervous habits
  • Know your audience-make sure that what you are sharing with them is appropriate for them
  • Have a passion for your subject–help your audience to catch the flames of passion for your subject by presenting with passion
  • Be yourself–don’t be a carbon copy of someone else
  • Don’t let your clothing be a distraction to your audience–don’t wear rock concert gear to a IBM meeting
  • Project confidence–when you are on the stage–you are the authority/the expert look the part
  • Practice good posture
  • Connect with your audience–look at them not at the floor or ceiling
  • Don’t be like a deer caught in the head lights–don’t let fear register all over your face
  • Be organized

We shared these and other tips with the writers. If you practice this you will be on your way to giving voice to your words. As an artist or public speaker it is important to write with a specific objective in mind and to use vivid and lively words. By doing this you guarantee that your words will be of interest. Then when you add your voice to the mix–life through your voice has been released.
