How to be an Informed Speaker?

The ability to communicate has been given to man–some though speech and others through sign language. But is that the same as communicating in an informed way? Is it the same as being an effective speaker? No.

To be an effective speaker you need to be knowledgeable about your subject matter. This will enable you to be an informed speaker who can then inform his/her audience. Neal Rosenblatt shared with our listeners several things that can help them to be an informed speaker…and I would like to share them with you.

An Informed Speaker is:

  • one who loves what he is doing. It is not about holding a job or fulfilling an obligation. It is enjoying the presentation aspect of your life. It is doing what you like to do. This will make it easier and more enjoyable for you.
  • an expert. Know your subject matter. Do not take this responsibility lightly–your audience is expecting value for their time. And they have willing given up their time to listen to you…the expert. That is why you need to know your material and know the recent trends or technological advancement in your field. Or the latest arguments that would affect your position–both positively or negatively.
  • personable. Be personable–share your life experiences with your audience provided that they are relevant to your presentation. This will not only help to drive home your point but it will help you to connect with your audience.
  • confident. You can’t be afraid to speak. You have to make a decision and then do it. And with practice you will be more comfortable presenting.
  • patient. Be patient with yourself. Take the time you need to understand the material that you are studying. Don’t present information that you are confused about until you understand it–this will help you to be able to answer your listeners questions completely and concisely.

Anyone can talk, but the informed speaker has the skills to inform his audience in a why that enlightens, entertains, and connects with the listener.
