Public Speaking and Debate
As a public speaker it is likely that at some point you will get into a debate situation. A debate is when you have an argument of two opposing points of view. This will be especially true if you enter the world of politics or if you get involved with humanitarian issues.
Though your goal right now is to be an eloquent speaker you should be prepared in case a simple public presentation turns into a debate. How can you prepare yourself for this?
There arefive things that you can do to prepare yourself for a debate.
Know Thy Subject
Know your subject. This includes your side and the opposition’s side. In order to do this you need to do research. Do not just look at your issue superficially. Go deep into the subject—so that you can be acquainted with both sides of the argument. And if necessary argue both positions.
Practice
Take time to practice your speech. Use a mirror. Gather friends and family to listen to your presentation and give you feedback.
Listen Carefully
Record yourself as you speak and then evaluate your speech for tone, volume, and content. Listen carefully—is your subject well researched. Is it engaging or gripping? Is it boring?
If you are in a debate listen to what your opponent says…stick to the issue do not allow him/her to introduce something that takes you away from the issue being discusses. When people do this it is called introducing a “Red Herring”. You don’t to argue your point effectively only to find out that you are no longer discussing the original issue.
Breathe
Take time to practice your breathing while you practice. This will help you to develop the habit of breathing calmly and consistently while giving your presentation. Breathing helps to alleviate tension and anxiety.
Don’t Make it Personal
Remember that when you are presenting a speech or if you are in a debate it is not personal. Stick to the issues. Do not go off on a tangent or get so emotionally wound up that you forget what the issue was to begin with. You can be passionate without getting angry.
If you follow these simple tips you will become an effective debater and a powerful public speaker.
