Public Speaking and Listening

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” Proverbs 1:5 (NIV).

Did you know that listening is an essential part of public speaking? Many individuals fail to realize this fact—they erroneously believe that public speaking is all about talking or sharing their own thoughts or opinions. But public speaking is more, so much more than this.

A person who listens will increase in knowledge. This means that she will be informed about many issues and subjects.

A person who is always talking doesn’t give himself the opportunity to acquire knowledge. He robs himself of the joys of learning which comes through listening.

As a public speaker you should always be seeking knowledge. Your ears should be on the lookout for information and facts—so when you hear it you can dig deeper though research.

The act of digging deeper is getting guidance—it can be through reading books, magazines, case studies, and articles, listening to tapes, interviewing experts, or conducting a survey. This demonstrates that you understand your need for additional help. This is an important characteristic of a public speaker—the willingness to seek and listen.

As you go forward, try to listen more—for you will grow in knowledge and that is a major component to being an extraordinary public speaker.
