Public Speaking and the Mind

“The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly” Proverbs 15:14 (NIV).

Have you ever met a person who just loves to talk? A person whose mouth is full of foolish arguments? A person who is lazy in his thinking? A person who doesn’t seek after knowledge? Well, I have.

The thing that struck me the most is that these individuals are always quick to speak even when they don’t have knowledge on the subject. As an aspiring public speaker it is your duty to be knowledgeable about your subject. It is up to you to gain understanding and to talk with wisdom.

How can you do this?

Exercise your Mind

First, you have to be willing to exercise your mind. Public speaking is not for the lazy or slothful individual. It is not for the non-thinker or the opinionated individual who cannot back up his opinion with facts.

Public speaking is for the determined, diligent, active thinker who desires to know both sides of an issue—so he can both present and defend his position within his speech.

Be a Seeker

Second, you have to be a “seeker.” Be a person who has an inquiring mind and desires to acquire knowledge. Don’t be satisfied with hearing people’s opinions—form you own but base them on facts. Do the necessary research to draw a sound conclusion.

Feed on Good Food

Lastly, use credible sources. Anyone can have thoughts on a subject but do they have the proper credentials…are their opinions backed by sound logic?

If you want to be a dynamic public speaker you have to be a dynamic thinker—a person who seeks after knowledge, who walks with understanding and who knows how to apply knowledge—which is wisdom.
