Public Speaking and the Opposing View

For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” Proverbs 11:14 (NIV).

As a public speaker you should strive to examine the opposing view. If you only study one side of an issue it may seem logical and reasonable. But it is when you look at the opposing side that you’ll discover any flaws in your logic or weaknesses in your position.

Research is one way to examine the opposing view. You can seek counsel from those who are experts in the subject. You can conduct a survey amongst your friends and family to see if they concur with your point of view. Or you can visit your local library, or do research on the web.

This will allow you to hear from a wide range of advisers—which will enable you to draw a better conclusion and strengthen your presentation. The other benefits of studying the opposing view is that it gives you the opportunity to change your own views that are wrong, you can better defend your position, and you can communicate your position more effectively to others.

You will never be able to evaluate every view point but if you are diligent to learn more about alternate views you can strengthen your presentations by leaps and bounds.
