Master public speakers know how to grab their audience’s attention. They can do so with their very first word or gesture. Their methods can very—from the use of a story, a joke, a statistic or a famous quote. Their method of captivating their audience is only limited by their creativity.
Master Public Speakers Know Their Strengths and Weaknesses
Master public speakers know their strengths and weaknesses. They accent their natural strengths or learned skills in their speech presentation. If they are good at telling jokes they will utilize them in their speech…otherwise they will refrain from doing so—until they have mastered the art of delivery.
Master Public Speakers Know What Their Speech Needs
That’s right they are able to assess what their speech needs to make it stronger, more powerful, more gripping and of value to their listener. They attempt to connect the dots for their listener so they will not have to.
Master Public Speakers Are Prepared
Yes, master public speakers are prepared. They know their speech material. They are familiar with their visual aids. They are knowledgeable about their audience. They are familiar with the place where they will be giving their presentation. And they have a plan in case something goes wrong with their visual aids or equipment.
Now you know what master public speakers know…the question now is will you use it?
Find your own voice and style as you present. What do you feel the most comfortable doing? Once you know this, practice incorporating that style (jokes, famous quotes, facts and figures, etc. into your speech—as you keep in mind the occasion of your presentation and your audience.
Don’t be afraid to try something new, different or unusual. Yes, you could be the person who can tell a joke at a funeral. Or to open a meeting with a one person skit. Dare to be your unique self as you learn public speaking from the masters!
